The investor's genie test: Three wishes that could be worth more than the next 100-bagger. Imagine rubbing an ancient lamp. Out pops a superintelligence capable of analyzing every company, forecasting economic scenarios, and solving scientific problems beyond human comprehension. It offers you three wishes. “Make me a billionaire!” “Tell me tomorrow's winning stock!” “Give me guaranteed passive income!” Whoa, slow down, Warren Buffett with a lottery ticket. 😂 What if your billion dollars arrives in a currency nobody accepts? Your winning stock collapses after you bet the house on it. Your passive-income machine pays you generously while quietly destroying your capital. Welcome to the genie problem: Getting exactly what you ask for isn't always getting what you actually want. The genie in the lamp, famously associated with Aladdin and The Arabian Nights, offers a timeless lesson. Greed can become a trap. Shortcuts have consequences. Power doesn't guarantee freedom. Sometimes, the cleverest move is questioning the wish itself. So, if a genuinely benevolent, god-like artificial superintelligence (ASI) appeared tomorrow, here's what I'd ask for as an investor. 1️⃣ Truth Over Tips: Show Me What I'm Getting Wrong. 🔎I'd skip the hot stock tip and ask for something more valuable: the truth, including the parts that destroy my favorite investment thesis. Which businesses have genuine competitive advantages? Which AI companies have real customers and sustainable cash flows? Where are debt, dilution, expensive valuations, and circular financing hiding behind impressive headlines? Then I'd ask three uncomfortable questions:
The practical move: Research businesses, not buzzwords. Consider three US-listed research candidates: These are research candidates, not verified buy recommendations. Each needs current financial statements, valuation analysis, competitive research and a credible bear case. For a simpler starting point, Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI) provides broad US equity exposure. Vanguard Total World Stock ETF (VT) adds international equities within a global stock-market portfolio. Neither eliminates market risk, and owning both doesn't automatically improve diversification. The lesson? Don't buy a story just because it sounds like the future. Verify the economics. 2️⃣ Resilience Over Returns: Build a Portfolio That Survives Being Wrong. 🛡️A crystal ball sounds brilliant until it predicts the wrong future with absolute confidence. I'd rather own a portfolio that can withstand several plausible futures than one that succeeds only if my forecast comes true. Imagine three scenarios:
Your job isn't to predict every twist. It's to avoid being forced to sell quality assets at distressed prices. The practical move: Build a portfolio around your goals, time horizon and ability to absorb losses.
These serve different purposes; they aren't a compulsory shopping list. Bonds can lose value, and Treasury funds are not identical to insured bank deposits. Choose an allocation suited to your circumstances. Keep emergency savings separate from volatile investments. Review overlapping holdings, concentration, fees and liquidity. Avoid leverage that could force you to liquidate at the worst possible time. The SEC's investor guidance explains that asset allocation should reflect your time horizon and risk tolerance. Diversification can reduce risk, but it cannot guarantee profits or prevent losses. Remember: Anyone can look clever in the future they predicted. Wealth builders need a plan that survives the futures they didn't. 3️⃣ Agency Over Dependence: Make Your Money Serve Your Life. 🔑Here's the wish hiding in plain sight. I'd ask the superintelligence to help me build lasting financial independence without becoming a full-time stock-chart zombie. That means owning productive assets, developing adaptable skills, maintaining liquidity and building income sources that don't all depend on one employer, company or platform. But beware: high dividends aren't automatically sustainable income. A distribution can include a return of your own capital. A supposedly passive strategy can become an expensive trading treadmill. The practical move: Automate the routine, not the judgment. Set up regular contributions that fit your budget. Review investments periodically. Understand the fees, taxes and risks. Keep learning how technology changes businesses and employment. Use AI to generate research questions, compare scenarios and challenge your assumptions—not to surrender control of your brokerage account. The SEC, the North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA), and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) have warned investors that AI-generated information can be inaccurate, while scammers use AI to make fraudulent investment pitches more convincing. A real superintelligence should make you more capable, not more dependent. The Genie Test: Your Practical Checklist ✅Before acting on a stock idea, exchange-traded fund (ETF), trading signal or AI recommendation, ask: For an unsolicited investment pitch, take a 24-hour pause. Verify the person and platform independently. Never hand over passwords, private keys or verification codes to someone claiming to be an AI assistant or investment professional. One more genie-sized warning: no screening formula can prove that a business is a bargain. Metrics must be interpreted in context, and passing a checklist doesn't eliminate risk. The S&P 500 is partying, banks are stumbling, and AI stocks are hogging the microphone. Here's how to investigate the warning, find potential opportunities and protect your portfolio without becoming a full-time doomsday prepper.
